I don't understand—the comment says it's expensive, but the article says it's one of the cheapest roofs you can get. Which one is it? It makes a lot of difference in someone's decision.

Is a metal roof really greener—I mean, more environmentally friendly—than a tile or shingle roof? How does that happen? Doesn't it take a whole bunch of fossil fuels to mine metal ores and process them into something usable?

You also save money on labor, since steel roofs are so much easier to put on; it takes the crew fewer man-hours to get it on. And then it lasts a lot longer, too. My last 2 houses have had steel roofs; I don't know why anyone would pick any other kind.

This might sound like a stupid question, but do houses stay warm enough when they have metal roofs? Obviously they are insulated no matter what kind of roof they have, but it just seems like it would be harder for a single layer of metal to keep you warm than it would be for multiple layers of tiles or shingles.

Do all roofing companies offer steel roofs? I mean, how does that work? Do you have to call a special company, or is it just a normal choice along with tiles or shingles? When we got our roof replaced, I don't think it was something very many people did. I don't even remember seeing metal roofs until recently.

Where can you get metal roof paint? You can't just pick it up at your local hardware store, can you? Color and appearance matter a lot to me; I'd like to be able to look over all the colors and decide for myself. I want my house to look good on the outside.

Our neighbors had a nice blue steel roof, and it looked great. They never had any trouble with it—and believe me, they could afford something different if they wanted it. They picked it because they liked it, not necessarily because it was cheap.
